Stories on Stage Sacramento wraps up its ninth season this week with works by prize-winning authors Dana Johnson and Melissa Yancy.
Dana Johnson is an author and English professor at USC who grew up in Los Angeles. Her story collection “Break Any Woman Down” won the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction in 2001 and her story “Melvin in the Sixth Grade” earned a Special Mention for the Pushcart Prize in 2002. The Los Angeles Times Book Review called her 2012 novel “Elsewhere, California” a “powerful search for self” and “heartbreaking as it is humorous.”
At Stories on Stage Sacramento Lori Russo will perform a reading of “Because That’s Just Easier” from Dana Johnson’s 2016 story collection “In The Not Quite Dark.” In the story, a mother’s doubts about moving to downtown Los Angeles resurface when her six-year-old daughter encounters homeless people on Skid Row and realizes she’s unable to help them.
Stories on Stage Sacramento will be on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7p.m. at the CLARA Auditorium. The event will also feature work by prize-winning short story author Melissa Yancy.
