Hop on SacRT light rail or a bus and you could start earning credits through a free app called Miles.
The new app is used to track your walking, biking and other transportation choices, and it could help the city of Sacramento plan future roadways and bus routes.
Jessica Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for Regional Transit, says accumulated miles can be used to get online discounts for shopping and entertainment.
"The city of Sacramento is also reaching out to local businesses to try to get people involved locally to see if we can get some free items or discounts on items,” she said. “So as the popularity increases, we're hoping that there can be more rewards offered."
The app requires sharing your location, which some might consider a privacy violation and out of the question.
Miles CEO Jigar Shah says the platform looks at anonymous travel pattern data to predict near-future demand and at no time is personal information shared with any third party.
"The Miles app is opt-in with no personal data shared at any time," he said.
As of this week, at least 1,100 people have given that consent. Gonzalez says as that number grows, the information shared could paint a clearer picture of how streets are used in the city.
"So this really gives us actual real data that we can use to make those decision for future planning," she said.
Sacramento, SacRT and Sacramento State are all part of a four-month pilot program with the Miles company that runs into late July.
Editor's note: This story was updated to include a response from the company about how the app uses personal data.
