Gov. Jerry Brown has appointed the first-ever head of California’s new medical marijuana regulatory agency.
Lori Ajax is a top deputy at the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, where she’s worked for more than 20 years.
She’ll be responsible for starting up the Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation — or “BuMMR” — at the California Department of Consumer Affairs. The governor and Legislature approved the regulatory structure last year, nearly 20 years after voters legalized medical marijuana.
The position will pay $150,000 a year. Ajax is a registered Republican.
