FINAL: A Sacramento sheriff's deputy was killed and two CHP officers wounded in a shootout yesterday at an Auburn Boulevard motel.
It started when members of an auto theft task force went to the Ramada Inn and saw two women get in a stolen vehicle. They led officers on a chase to Elk Grove where they were arrested.
Members of the task force then checked for other suspects in a room at the motel. That's when somone shot through the door and wounded two CHP officers. Sac Sheriff's spokesman Sgt Tony Turnbull says the suspect then tried to escape through the rear of the room.
"We believe our deputy was shot when the suspect came out to the rear balcony and started to exchange gunfire with our deputies who were in the back," says Turnbull.
That suspect managed to jump off the balcony and hop into a car. A chase ended near El Camino High School when the suspect crashed. He then exchanged gunfire again with officers, was wounded and arrested.
Sheriff Scott Jones later confirmed deputy Robert French had died after sustaining a gunshot wound from a high powered weapon. French was 52 years old and a 21 year veteran of the department. He worked as a training officers with the north area patrol unit. The two wounded CHP officers are expected to recover.

UPDATE 6:12 P.M.: The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is confirming one of its deputies was killed Wednesday following a shootout at the Ramada Inn on Auburn Boulevard near Business 80.
Sheriff's Deputy Robert French, 52, died after sustaining gunshot wounds, according to Sheriff Scott Jones. He was a 21-year veteran with the department. According to officials, French died from the gunshots wounds after a suspect at the Ramada Inn balcony fired at him with a high-power rifle.
Two CHP officers were also shot and are expected to recover. The North Sacramento CHP division tweeted that one of the injured officers will undergo non-life threatening surgery. The other wounded officer is being treated and is expected to be released.
The Ramada Inn was cleared as of 6:14 p.m. after investigators checked the building for any other possible suspects.
Three people are under arrest at this time.
UPDATE 1:58 P.M.: One sheriff deputy and two CHP officers have been shot, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
Two females and one male are in custody in connection to the shooting.
The shooting happened at the Ramada Sacramento hotel on the 2600 block of Auburn Boulevard at Fulton Avenue.
It is unknown if there are more suspects inside the hotel, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. It is also unknown if more weapons are inside the hotel.
The officers shot were transported to the UC Davis Medical Center and Mercy San Juan Medical Center.
The incident began when the two females led CHP officers on a vehicle chase in what is believed to be a stolen vehicle.

ORIGINAL: According to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, an unknown department officer has been shot. The officer's condition is unknown at this time.
The shooting happened on the 2600 block of Auburn Boulevard at Fulton Avenue and it is still an active scene.
Fulton Avenue and Auburn Boulevard are shut down to traffic. All access to and from Business 80 at Fulton Avenue and Auburn Boulevard is closed.
