Light-rail service in the Sacramento region will expand starting Sunday in an effort to boost slumping ridership.
The new schedule has trains arriving every 15 minutes during peak travel times on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Previously the trains came every half-hour.
"We're hoping by offering more frequent service on the weekends, we could get more people trying out light rail,” Regional Transit’s Jessica Gonzalez said. “You know, if a train comes every 15 minutes, you don't really have to worry about a timetable, you can just show up and hop on. And we're hoping that can increase ridership during the workweek."
SacRT says the weekend expansion was one of the top suggestions it received during recent research.
The expanded weekend schedule is just one of several changes RT has made in recent months. The agency increased service to Folsom in June, and in October, for the first time in its history, some fares were lowered.
