Stanislaus County workers returned to the picket line Monday as the second week of their strike begins.
SEIU 521 — which represents 700 county workers including librarians, animal services, and social workers — rejected the county’s last and best offer on Friday. Among the issues are equity pay, high turnover, and heavy caseloads.
Union Chapter President Kate Selover, a county child support officer, says workers are demanding pay that is equal to surrounding areas. She adds other issues include high turnover, heavy caseloads, and unfair labor practices.
“The county is not getting the services that they need and those that are open have long lines and I’m sure you’re not being told that ... how many departments have been closed due to this strike,” she says.
While county officials declined interviews, County CEO Jody Hayes said in a written statement that “While many staff have chosen to have their voices heard on a picket line, numerous SEIU-represented staff members have chosen to report to work.”
The contract between the county and the union expired in June.
