Sacramento again will have its day. Literally.
On Tuesday, the City Council officially declared this Friday, September 16, as “916 Day,” which again adopts the region’s area code into an actual day on the calendar to recognize and celebrate the River City.
The city first officially acknowledged 916 Day in 2018, after years of unofficial events and concerts. This year, city officials are inviting residents to celebrate by volunteering to beautify and plant trees at community parks.
“Sacramento residents love their city, and 916 Day is a great way to show that by gathering with each other at city parks to volunteer,” Mayor Darrell Steinberg wrote in a statement. “I’m proud of our park commissioners and the work they’ve put into this celebration of community.”
In previous years, Sacramentans have held 916 Day events of their own, varying from hip-hop concerts to food gatherings. This year, there will be city-sponsored community events at parks for every Council district, including:
- A park clean up in Natomas on Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. at North Natomas Regional Park
- A tree planting on Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. at Triangle Park in North Sacramento
- an East Sacramento event on Oct. 8 at 9 a.m. at McKinley Park
- Tree planting and painting on Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. at John Muir Park downtown
- Tree planting on Sept. 16 at 8 a.m. at Argonaut Park near Freeport Boulevard in South Sacramento
- Tree Planting on Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. at George Sim Community Center near Elder Creek and Power Inn roads
- A big 916 Day Celebration and Tree Planting on Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at Garcia Bend Park in the Pocket, with speakers to follow at 6 p.m.
