You've come to the right place to find and share information about the I-5 repair
project. Through mid-July (if events stick to schedule) I'll be posting every weekday with the latest information from Caltrans, city officials and the KXJZ newsroom. I'll also be looking for your tips about alternate routes to share with others. And I'll be seeking your feedback on how the whole thing is working... or not working. (You'll need to register in order to post comments. Learn more here.)
By now we all know the I-5 closures are a big deal. But no one knows exactly how they will affect travelers. Will the Caltrans-recommended detour through West Sacramento be able to handle the increased traffic flow? Which downtown Sacramento streets will drivers use instead of I-5. And can those streets handle the congestion?
Although I'm a recent transplant to California, I've lived in other cities with their own freeway “issues.” In Phoenix, rapid growth put planners behind the curve to get enough freeways built to keep up with demand. When I lived in Chicago, I saw traffic jams on urban highways nearly all day long as the city’s magnificent “L” commuter trains zipped by in the medians. And, while I was working in Madison, Wisconsin, the freeways…or the beltways…as they’re called in that part of the world…raised the age old Midwestern question: “Can’t the snowplows move a little faster?”
No snowplows here in Sacramento, but there'll be plenty of heavy equipment at work between now and July 15th during the 27-million dollar repair project. The KXJZ newsroom will be busy too, keeping you up to speed on the project's progress and its changing impact on travel around the region. Of course, we’ll continue our regular traffic updates during Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
As for this blog, what will really help make it a great resource is your participation.
I cordially invite you to tell us about your experiences during the course of the I-5 repair project. Tell us what's working, and what's not. And tell us what tips you have to avoid the most congested areas of traffic. (Don't forget to register first.)
Oh, one last thought... not only am I new to California, I'm also new to this whole "blogging" thing. I mean, I wrote all my college papers on a typewriter. Remember those? So, bear with me. I'll do my best to give you information you can use. Meanwhile, see you in the slow lane!
