This two CD set from the 2001 Montreux Jazz Festival shows Jarrett's trio at its most buoyant, dynamic best. Bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette fit Jarrett like a snug glove. This trio is rapidly approaching its 25th anniversary and this is their 18th document for ECM.
There's a sense of telepathy between the members of this group. They truly breathe as one through dynamic interpretations of standards such as Miles Davis' "Four," Sonny Rollin's "Oleo," and Gerry Mulligan's "Five Brothers." Unique to this collection is the inclusion of three pieces in stride and ragtime styles. |

Over the past fifteen years, Ricardo Silveira has earned a reputation as one of Brazil's most admired and respected musicians. Born in Rio, Ricardo grew up listening to bossa nova, samba, and the steamy rhythms of Carnaval. He’s a graduate of the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where he studied alongside jazz greats Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell. Silveira has played on hundreds of recordings with such notables as Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, and Moacir Santos.
Outro Rio (Another River) was recorded in Rio and features guest vocalist Maria Rita on one track and the great Joao Donato on piano and Jaques Morelenbaum on cello. This mellow CD is Silveira’s most accomplished and mature recording to date. |

This hybrid CD will no doubt please both jazz and classical cognoscenti. Pianist's Bill Mays' arrangement of Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" is heart warming, with the trumpet and piano creating a new melody as the cello plays fragments of the original composition. Cellist Alisa Horn comes from a classical background, but warms up to the improvisations of veterans Bill Mays and trumpeter Marvin Stamm.
In the liner notes Bill Mays says. "A great melody is a great melody, be it from baroque or bebop." The Inventions Trio proves this is true with every selection on this distinctive, original album. |
