The city and county of Sacramento are not planning to open special cooling centers.
Roger Ince is the county Office of Emergency Services coordinator. He says it’s not the high temperature that causes the centers to be opened.
“We look at the nighttime temperature isn’t 75 degrees or above. We’re only hitting 72 on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The nighttime temperatures cooling down into the 60’s and that’s really the big number we look at because above 75 degrees your body doesn’t have the chance to refresh itself overnight.”
Ince says the city and county typically see only one or two people when they do open cooling centers.
He recommends community centers, public pools, libraries and malls for anyone who has no air conditioning and would like to cool down.
