The UC Davis Health system has launched a new mental health research center on their Sacramento campus.
The ‘Behavioral Health Center of Excellence’ will study mental illness and the human brain, and research ways to prevent severe mental health problems.
The Center’s new director, Dr. Frederick Meyers says its work will do as much for mental health patients as the UC Davis MIND institute has done for autistic people.
“We’re going to change mental health care through research," says Meyers.
UCLA is launching a similar research center. Both are part of a $15 million project funded by a commission created under the Mental Health Services Act.
"We think we can do the same thing in teenagers and other people with early signs of mental illness, in the same way the MIND institute has changed autism," says Meyers.
