Sacramento Republic F-C will take the pitch for its home opener Saturday night at Bonney Field.
In its first season, the team won the USL-PRO soccer league championship. But head coach Preki says the team can't look back.
"Just because we won a championship doesn't mean the work stops. We believe we have a group of players that are hungry to win again and all the time and that's how we're going about our business."
While the team plays it's second season, the team's ownership group continues a campaign to be a Major League Soccer franchise. The importance of that isn't lost on Preki, who's a two-time MLS MVP.
"Obviously it would be a great thing for the city, for the fans, obviously for all of us involved in the process, because we all feel that is the ultimate goal."
The team has lost two of its first three, but is tied for the lead league in scoring. It also leads the league in goals allowed.
