Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Rendon of Lakewood in Los Angeles County will be the next Speaker of the California Assembly.
The Democratic caucus unanimously elected him Thursday. He will replace Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, of San Diego. The leadership change will occur in January with the transition to be determined by Atkins and Rendon.
Rendon was first elected to the Assembly in 2012. Because of new term limit rules he can serve in the chamber until 2024. Atkins is termed out of the Assembly in 2016.
