Feb 23, 2016 8:54 p.m.: The Sacramento Coroner identified the victim in a Del Paso Heights shootout as Calvin Goldsmith. Goldsmith has no known city of residence.
Feb 23, 2016 UPDATE: On Monday around 1:30 p.m. Sacramento Police Department officers were alerted to gunfire in the area of the 3700 block of Branch Street in Del Paso Heights.
Near the scene, officers found a vehicle which had crashed into a fence near the corner of High Street and Norht Avenue. Officers found a 35-year-old man in the driver's seat of the car. He was unresponsive and appeared to have several gunshot wounds.
The city fire department attempted life-saving measures and rushed him to a hospital. But, he was pronounced dead by hospital staff.
Homicide detectives along with crime scene investigators began processing the scene for evidence. They believe the man exchanged gunfire with unknown number of suspect near Branch Street.
According to a Sacramento Police press release, detectives the suspect in the shooting fled the area in a vehicle. The police do not have a vehicle description.
Detectives did not identify a motive. They do not believe the shooting is a random incident. No arrests have been made at this time.
Feb 22, 2016: The Sacramento Police Department is investigating a shootout in Del Paso Heights this afternoon that has left at least one person in critical condition at a Sacramento hospital.
Sergeant Justin Brown says one man was shot outside, tried to drive away and crashed.
"Sac PD responded to the 3700 block of Branch Street on the report of a shooting," Brown said. "In fact, we received the Shot-Spotter activation which was basically able to direct us to the location."
Investigators have identified no suspects at this time.
