The Sacramento Kings announced Thursday that food and drinks served at the new downtown arena will be locally sourced.
"When Golden 1 Center opens this October, our concessions will consist of 90 percent locally grown ingredients from farms with environmentally friendly business practices from within a 150 mile radius of the arena," says President and Operating Officer Chris Granger.
Granger says it will be the first of its kind, farm-to-fork, or farm-to-court program in professional sports.
"Fans can now easily access healthy, farm-fresh, delicious foods when taking in a game or a show at the arena," says Michael Tuohy, the arena's executive chef.
He says only 10 percent of the food and drink will not be sourced locally...that includes things like chocolate.
"For sure coffee, even though we have local roasters here, we know the beans don't grow here," says Touhy. "Very very things really will fall into that 10 percent category."
He says food prices will be determined when the menus are crafted.
"I don't think 'expensive' is really a good word," says Tuohy. "I think it's going to be very fair. And our goal is to try to keep prices not terribly different than where they are today. We're just going to serve better food."
Tuohy says the menu will embrace seasonality. And all allowable leftovers will be donated to local food banks and charities.
