Fire agencies are expected to continue prescribed burn operations starting Monday in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit says prescribed fires are used as a way to reduce fuels that could feed future wildfires.
Federal, state and local fire agencies have been conducting the burns around Lake Tahoe since last October.
On the East Shore of the lake, burns may take place near Spooner Summit, Camp Galilee and on Kingsbury Grade near Edgewood Drive.
On the south shore, burns may take place near Lake Tahoe Boulevard and Sawmill Road, Panther Lane near South Tahoe High School, off Highway 89 near Spring Creek and off Santa Claus Drive and West River Parkway near Christmas Valley.
When and where to start a burn depends on weather, including conditions that allow the smoke to carry up and out of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) follows a prescribed fire burn plan for each operation. The plan considers temperature, humidity, wind, moisture of the vegetation and conditions for the dispersal of smoke.
The Forest Service says smoke from prescribed fire operations is normal and may continue for several days.
The TFFT includes federal, local and California and Nevada fire agencies, conservation districts from both states and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
