CapRadio and The Observer Awarded Prestigious Report for America Journalist
Sacramento, CA - December 8, 2020: Capital Public Radio (CapRadio) and The Sacramento Observer (The Observer) are pleased to announce that they have been selected as one of 64 new newsrooms around the nation to co-host a Report for America journalist to expand coverage of underserved areas in the greater Sacramento region.
This support from Report for America will enable the organizations to create a new education beat with a dedicated reporter starting in June 2021. The new position’s goals include expanding education coverage, focusing on learning disparities — especially during and after the pandemic — and reporting on communities traditionally underserved by journalism. With local news organizations facing mounting challenges in the region due to the COVID-19 pandemic and corporate acquisition, CapRadio and The Observer are committed to addressing the gaps in community coverage through this partnership.
“We are grateful and very excited to be awarded a prestigious Report for America corp member,” said Nick Miller, managing editor of news at CapRadio. “I’m also thrilled to continue growing CapRadio’s partnership with The Observer. I regularly look forward to connecting with publisher Larry Lee, and can’t wait to see what our two teams do together next year and beyond.”
“We are very excited about partnering with CapRadio on this effort,” said Observer publisher Larry Lee. “It is not often that community publications like ours are able to expand our editorial coverage, but with assistance from Report for America and our growing relationship with CapRadio, we will be able to provide a great service to the community by reporting on the educational needs of the region’s children.”
Report for America is a national service program that places journalists into local newsrooms to report on undercovered issues and communities. It is an initiative of The GroundTruth Project designed to meet an urgent need for community-focused journalism as news deserts increase nationwide due to the decline in traditional media outlets. Report for America is structured to harness the skills and idealism of an emerging group of journalists plus the creative spirit of local newsrooms. Nearly 2,000 journalists are expected to apply for roughly 200 spots in newsrooms chosen by Report for America, such as CapRadio’s and The Observer’s.
