Sacramento, CA – December 5, 2022: CapRadio is thrilled to announce A Music of Their Own, a new limited-series interview podcast hosted by vocalist, composer and former musicologist Majel Connery. All six episodes will be released on December 8, and the podcast audio trailer is available now.
In this new podcast, Connery explores what it means to be a woman in music and the immense drive and resolve required to succeed in an industry dominated by men. Through relatable stories and frank discussions with female-identifying composers, artists and creators, A Music of Their Own highlights the need for parity in the industry as well as the incredible accomplishments of these women at the top of their field. Throughout each episode, listeners will also be introduced to the unique, imaginative and exceptional music that the guests have created over the course of their careers.
“This podcast comes from a place of genuine discovery and excitement for me personally — I’m on the edge of my seat during these conversations,” said Connery. “I want the world to meet these women, and to be moved by their daring and their dreams the way I’ve been. I can only imagine they will inspire listeners the way they inspire me.”
A music industry veteran who makes “electro-art-dream-pop with repressed Classical influences,” Connery’s work has been called “superb” by The New York Times. She has written songs about porn, periods and sad fish for Radiolab’s multi-episode series Gonads, and recently finished a 42-city tour as the singer of art-rock band Sky Creature. Passionate about championing women in music, Connery collaborated with Found Sound Nation to co-curate Rockaway Music Live, a female-fronted concert series hosted by the Rockaway Hotel, and partnered with CapRadio to co-produce and host A Music of Their Own.
“Majel approaches these interviews with candor and vulnerability — she craves a deeper understanding of the journey these women are on,” said Sally Schilling, director of podcasts at CapRadio. “Listening to her sit down with these artists is like going to coffee with your best friends, there’s no beating around the bush.”
The first season of A Music of Their Own focuses on classical music — an industry where only 12% of the music programmed by American orchestras over the last year was written by women. The six-episode release features interviews with Sarah Kirkland Snider, Nathalie Joachim, Wu Fei, Angélica Negrón, Sarah Cahill and inti figgis-vizueta.
A Music of Their Own will debut as an NPR Network podcast, which leverages NPR and a collective of independent public media organizations across the nation to connect with millions of people. All episodes will be accessible in the NPR One app and wherever podcasts are available.
Listen to all six episodes of A Music of Their Own on December 8. A press kit is available here.
