CapRadio Selected for the PRX Journalism Podcast Accelerator
CapRadio’s Sally Schilling and Jen Picard will participate in the 12-week program designed to help news organizations launch podcasts and develop stronger, more creative and more nimble podcast strategies.
Sacramento, CA - September 27, 2022: Capital Public Radio (CapRadio) is excited to announce that it has been selected to participate in the PRX Journalism Podcast Accelerator (JPA). The JPA provides mentorship, enduring support and necessary skills to help journalists at news organizations launch and sustain podcasts at their organizations. CapRadio is one of 20 news media organizations accepted into the program, which includes major public media podcast producers such as KQED and Colorado Public Radio.
PRX, one of the world’s leading podcast publishers, launched the JPA to help local journalists bring important stories to communities who are increasingly consuming digital audio content. Each team selected for the program will participate in an intensive 12-week curriculum focusing on key pillars of podcasting, including audience-centered content, business development, strategies for monetization and workflow within a larger organization.
“CapRadio is committed to meeting audiences where they are, and on-demand audio offers a robust platform for journalists to engage listeners,” said Sally Schilling, director of on-demand at CapRadio. “Participating in the JPA is an exciting opportunity that will help us further define what it means for CapRadio to design authentic podcasts for our audiences.”
CapRadio applied to the JPA as it invests in its podcast program as part of its digital transformation efforts to serve more people in relevant and accessible ways. With the ongoing growth in podcasts, CapRadio continues to refine its audience-focused approach to podcast development and implement industry best practices in order to scale the program sustainably.
CapRadio has already produced a number of limited-series podcasts that have covered health, social justice and environmental issues. It won national PMJA awards for TahoeLand, which explores the global impacts of climate change through the ecosystem and community of Lake Tahoe, and After the Assault, which elevates the voices of eight survivors and their experiences in the aftermath of sexual violence and during police investigations. CapRadio also offers its flagship news-talk show, Insight with Vicki Gonzalez, as a daily podcast.
CapRadio Director of On-Demand Sally Schilling and Senior Podcast Producer Jen Picard started the program on September 19, 2022. For more information about the JPA program, visit the PRX website.
