Never before has an English Premier League team played in Sacramento, but the Norwich City Football Club Canaries will on July 18. The team will play against a team from Mexico as part of a soccer double header sponsored by Sacramento Pro Soccer.
A group of Sacramento All-Stars will also play on the 18th against a group of Major League Soccer reserves.
Matt Wiesenfarth is one of the all-stars who will play against a group of Major League Soccer reserves in the other match.
“There’s little to no chance to watch an EPL team or a team of that caliber around here unless you go across to England or go to Spain to watch. For the kids around here to get a chance to see a team like that play, it’s got to be unbelievable. It’ll give you the motivation to try and get to the next level.”
Dominik Jakubek is a local soccer coach. He was at the scheduling announcement at Raley Field. He says the exhibition is a great way to promote Sacramento Pro Soccer’s first season which begins in 2014.
“We’ve been waiting, yearning for a professional franchise to come to Sacramento that’s going to be here to stay and be good. You know, so this is, even me being an adult, I’m excited too, man.”
Sacramento Pro Soccer does not have a name for its team, yet, but is expected to announce that on the day of the exhibition.
