“Parking in our downtown has always been an issue.”
Abbanat says that’s because Davis has a compact downtown and a lot of people coming from out of town to work, shop, eat and see shows.
Right now, you can go to a paid parking lot or park on the street for free for two hours.
“We frequently get complaints from visitors and those who get ticketed that they would like to be able to stay longer because two hours isn’t long enough to go to a movie and have a meal at the same time.”
Another problem is people circling the downtown area looking for parking spots, creating traffic jams.
So the city has formed a task force to figure out how to free up more spaces. The group meets tonight at the Davis Senior Center.
Potential solutions include converting those free two-hour on-street spots into paid metered parking.
The task force is expected to make a recommendation to the city council later this summer.
