Stan Lumsden is the Chief Park Ranger in Sacramento County. Lumsden says some cyclists are going 10-to-15 miles an hour above the posted speed limit. That’s dangerous for a trail that’s also used by runners and walkers.
“We end up with head-on collisions as a result of that so we’re starting an enforcement campaign to slow people down on the trail.”
To help with that enforcement, rangers have acquired some new equipment.
“We’re actually using what’s called a LiDAR, it’s a laser speed detection device, very target specific, similar to a radar but actually uses laser technology.”
The fine for a first offense is $50…double that for a second violation.
If you do get a ticket it’s considered a violation of the park code and will not be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
