City Manager Laura Gill says the proposed $164 million
budget is $10 million more than last fiscal year and maintains the current level of service.
“We have our challenges but we are addressing them and by and large I think we’re in good fiscal health.”
Gill says the biggest challenge will come in the fiscal year that starts on July 1st of 2015. That’s when the retirement system for city employees – “PERS” – will increase fees that cities like Elk Grove pay to take part in the system.
“What we have is two years to figure out how we’re going to tighten our belt so that we take care of our obligations to our employees for the PERS payments while at the same time making sure that our citizens continue to see the same level of service or better.”
Gill says one idea to help do that is to set up a convention and visitors bureau to create jobs and keep businesses from leaving town.
The city council is scheduled to talk about the 2013-14 budget at its meeting tomorrow night.
