Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has set a new deadline in the partnership with California over development in Lake Tahoe.
Nevada’s threat to pull out of the Tahoe environmental compact with California hasn’t gone away, but it has a new deadline and demands action from congress and California.
Governor Sandoval signed legislation withdrawing the threat to pull out of compact, but only if California agrees to change development restrictions by January 1st, 2014.
Jeff Cowen of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency says a recommitment like this is important.
“Because there are so many jurisdictions and political boundaries up here that we need partnership and cooperation in order to do environmental work,” said Cowen.
The Sierra Club has sued to stop changes to development restrictions around the Lake.
Representatives say cooperation between the states is based on politics, not science and the suit will move forward.
