Lake Tahoe is easy to see from the road, but getting to the shore is tough. A recent survey found that steep cliffs, dense trees, long distances and parking shortages are obstacles to many of the 2 million tourists a year.
The non-profit Tahoe Fund hopes its Tahoe Beaches App will help solve some of those problems.
CEO Amy Berry:
“There’s a lot of folks (who) use the same couple beaches, so they get super full. And what we are hoping with this Beaches App is there’s over 50 beaches on there – some that people have never heard of – that it will spread the crowds out a little bit and have a better environmental impact.”
The app is available for Apple and Android smartphones, and lists each beach’s amenities like kayak rentals, volleyball, public transit and if pets are allowed. It cost $50,000 to develop, but it’s free to the public. And it’s already been downloaded 2,000 times since its release earlier this month.
