The Coalition to Save Lake Tahoe is made up of eight environmental groups led by the Sierra Club. Tahoe Chapter Chair Bob Anderson says the group is fighting California Senate Bill 630 which would endorse a new regional plan for Tahoe.
“It takes a novel approach, it believes that the pathway to environmental improvement is through economic development and it really hasn’t made the case for that and didn’t have the analysis to show that might be the case and it doesn’t have adequate monitoring so that we can know if it is working” - Bob Anderson, Chairman, Sierra club, Tahoe Chapter
Nevada has demanded that Tahoe development decisions include consideration of economic conditions. It has threatened to leave a bi-state compact to protect Lake Tahoe if California doesn’t agree.
Anderson says any changes to the bi-state compact must go before congress and the coalition will fight there too. “It is a long shot, but we feel like we have to give it a shot," Anderson says.
