Governor Brown approved the development of a system that detects seismic activity and issues a warning before the shaking begins.
“The benefits of an advanced warning to make your surroundings safer are tremendous,” says Senator Alex Padilla, the bill’s author. Padilla says the extra seconds could give hospitals time to fire up their generators, train operators time to brake, and people time to find a safe location.
Another bill signed by Brown allows people caring for ailing grandparents, grandchildren, siblings and in-laws to be compensated under the Paid Family Leave act. Up till now, the act had only applied to those caring for children, parents and spouses.
The Governor also signed a measure making it unlawful to photograph children without parental consent. Celebrities had backed the measure to protect their children from overzealous paparazzi.
