Here's how Mayor Kevin Johnson made today's announcement.
"Track is back in Shaq-ramento."
That's a reference to basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal a new Kings minority owner.
USA Track and Field picked Sacramento State to host its 2014 outdoor championships from June 26 to 29. Johnson says it'll mean booked hotels and busy restaurants.
"Hundreds of thousands of spectators are going to be here over a week's period of time, spending dollars in our community."
Sacramento State was awarded the event in part because the Sacramento Sports Commission, local hotels and the Convention and Visitors Bureau have agreed to pay for resurfacing the university's track.

Another reason - Sacramento State's previous experience hosting Olympic Trials in 2000 and 2004. Jim Estes is with USA Track and Field.
"The record attendance that you guys managed everyday and the show that you put on was great."
Sacramento tourism officials say the 2004 Olympic Trials brought a $10 million economic impact to the region.
