One measure would prohibit non-profit hospitals from paying their executives more than $450,000 per year. That’s what the U.S. President earns.
The other measure would prohibit hospitals from overcharging for health care.
“You see that crutches cost $800, aspirin costs $25, gauze bandages cost $25 or $35, and everybody’s experienced this,” says Dave Regan with the Service Employees International Union.
The California Hospital Association says her group hasn’t had time to examine the measures, but she finds them counterproductive.
“We’re disappointed that the initiatives were filed,” says Jan Emerson-Shea. “We’ve been working very collaboratively with SEIU for the past year-and-a-half.”
The union plans to start gathering signatures in January.
