The Attorney General’s office says it has been looking out for potential fraud since September and noticed some dodgy on-line activity last month.
“We sent them cease and desist letters informing them they were violating the law,” says Jill Habig with the Attorney General’s office.
Habig says these private insurance broker sites were misleading the public.
“Californians who were interested in purchasing health care plans with the full benefits of the Affordable Care Act, were being lured to these sites,” she says. “They were purchasing private insurance plans.”
James Scullary with Covered California says there’s only one legitimate site: “Coveredca.com is the only place you can apply for financial assistance in getting health care coverage.”
The Attorney General’s office says websites like coveredcalifornia.com and stateexchanges.org have either been deactivated or redirected to the official site.
