Democratic Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg spoke with reporters outside the Capitol Thursday.
“I’m not the target of an investigation,” he said. “I’m not, have not been. I’m not the target of an investigation.”
Steinberg and Senator Kevin de Leon were named as possible targets in a court filing by fellow democratic Senator Ron Calderon, who is under investigation for corruption. De Leon also rebuffed Calderon’s claims.
Sacramento State Communications professor Barbara O’Connor said Calderon is using a common defense tactic.
“Scattering names as a defense, on Calderon’s part, is a way to divert attention,” she said.
The FBI said it does not comment on anything related to investigations. Calderon has not been charged with any crime.
