The ACLU of California says Covered California lags behind most other state exchanges in putting voter registration options front and center in on-line and paper applications.
“Almost all the other states have managed to incorporate voter registration,” says Lori Shellenberger with the ACLU. “We think it’s important for them to make this a priority.”
Covered California’s Sarah Sol says the exchange website has a voter registration button. “Also in our paper application," she adds "there’s a question in the frequently asked questions section at the very end of the application where people can read – what do I need to do in order to register to vote?”
Sol says Covered California is also hiring a voter registration coordinator.
The ACLU says it’s giving Covered California until December 16 to improve the voter registration component of its application process, or legal action may be filed.
