State Republicans launched coveringhealthcareca.com this summer, what they say is an informational website.
It has general questions and answers about the federal health law. It also has posted a list of taxes under the law, and a tool for calculating a tax penalty for not complying with the mandate to buy insurance.
“It’s a phony website who’s only purpose is to lead people down the wrong path," says Democratic Congressman Mark Takano of Riverside, California.
Takano says the website is an effort to depress enrollment and make the law fail.
But Sabrina Lockhart of the Assembly Republican Caucus says constituents asked for general information about the law.
“This website is just one tool of many outreach efforts about what this new law means, it’s purely factual,” says Lockhart.
Takano wants California’s Attorney General to take the site down.
