New off-ramp lanes on Highway 50 now lead to two new traffic lights for northbound and southbound Watt Avenue.
The change surprised some drivers and caused longer-than-usual delays during rush hour traffic.
But Patrick Carpenter with the Sacramento County Transportation Department says the Department is making some changes.
"We're on it. We're fixing it. It will be better and we appreciate people's patience," says Carpenter. "It's a real challenge to try to do huge changes to an interchange while trying to keep the traffic moving and we will be better in the future."
Carpenter says more lanes will be opened to alleviate some of the backup and the timing of lights will be adjusted as needed.
He says monitoring cameras will allow signal lights to be changed in real-time.
The Watt Avenue and US-50 interchange is being redesigned to reduce congestion, install bus lanes, and improve safety for bicyclists and pedestrians.
