The contributions came from two Arizona based non-profits that were found to be in violation of California law.
The FPPC’s Gary Winuck said one of the PACs, the Small Business Action Committee, has already disgorged $300,000.
“I think this should send a very strong message to political action committees,” he said, “that, first of all, you should have your due diligence done when accepting contributions.”
Wincuk said the committees have agreed to pay back the full amount, but the FPPC lacks the power to make sure they do. He said neither PAC broke any laws.
The SBAC said it agreed to the settlement to put the case behind it.
