Justice Joyce Kennard has been serving on the California Supreme Court for 25 years. She was first appointed by Governor George Deukmejian in 1989. She plans to retire on April 5th.
Kennard’s retirement will give Governor Jerry Brown the opportunity to appoint a second Justice to the court. In a statement Brown said:
"The state and its people have been very well served by Justice Kennard and her independence and intellectual fortitude have left a lasting mark on the Court.”
