Authorities responded to the schools after some students reported seeing a man with a gun.
Both schools were placed on lockdown as of 1:16 p.m.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office said units searched the area for any sign of the suspicious person, but did not find anyone.
The California Highway Patrol, as well as CalFire, provided support for the search.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the call from a Colfax Elementary School employee came in at 12:12 p.m. The students reportedly saw the suspicious person near the soccer field of the high school.
Officials initially requested that parents do not respond to the Colfax schools due to emergency responders. As of 2:38 p.m., they said students would be released by 3 p.m. Elementary school students would be first and then the high school students.
