Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is taking a lead role in the NBA's handling of a scandal involving L.A. Clippers' owner Donald Sterling.
Celebrity-gossip site TMZ has posted an audio recording alleged to be Sterling, making racially charged comments.
The NBA and the Clippers are investigating, and Johnson - a former NBA all-star- is representing the players' union.
Johnson told the TODAY show that he believes NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will take swift, strong action against Sterling, if the comments are authentic.
"It's a defining moment in the history of this league, and I'm very confident that the commissioner will act in the best interest of the players, the owners and the league and I feel like the only way to do that is to do the most severe sanctions possible and I do expect him to do that in short order," Johnson said.
