Tesla Motors has started work on building modifications at a plant in Lathrop in San Joaquin County. The electric automaker is already seeking job applicants for the new facility.
Tesla says it is expanding its infrastructure and has signed leases for more than 625,000 square feet of California real estate. The Lathrop plant is located along Interstate 5.
It covers 430,000 square feet and served as a parts distribution center for the NUMMI auto plant in Fremont which shut down in 2010.
Lathrop City Manager Steve Salvatore welcomes Tesla Motors and the operation will bring 100 much needed jobs."For something like this where it brings a little big higher paying job to the area, a little more technical in nature, this type of facility is perfect for an expanding Bay Area."
Salavatore says Tesla has taken out permits for modifications to the building and Tesla's website lists jobs related to manufacturing at the Lathrop plant.
