Get ready for an epic political battle this fall between trial lawyers and doctors. An initiative that would raise the cap on medical malpractice damages has qualified for California’s November ballot.
The cap is currently set at $250,000, where it’s been for decades.
The initiative would also require drug and alcohol testing for doctors … and require physicians to check a prescription drug history database before prescribing certain drugs to patients.
Supporters hope those two provisions will help build public support for the more controversial medical malpractice cap increase.
Both sides are expected to pour tens of millions of dollars into the campaign.
