Tea party Assemblyman Tim Donnelly leads all of Brown’s challengers, but a poll shows his margin has narrowed of late. He’s focused on using his energized conservative base to turn out the party’s core in what’s expected to be a low-turnout election.
“I think this is gonna show, very clearly, whether or not word of mouth with social media and in-person is as effective and powerful as those massive money machines that the political elite use,” says Donnelly.
Former U.S. Treasury Department official Neel Kashkari has poured two million dollars into his own campaign to help get his message out through direct mail and TV ads.
“I’m offering the state a chance to grow the Republican Party, to unite Californians around a positive, inclusive, economic message. And I think Asm. Donnelly is offering a very different view of where the Republican Party should go,” Kashkari says.
As for Jerry Brown, he’s so far ahead in polls and fundraising that he hasn’t held a single public campaign event as he seeks a record fourth term as governor.
