A library vote in South Lake Tahoe could have a ripple effect on other county libraries.
Eighty percent of the South Lake Tahoe Library’s funding comes from a $20 property tax. This year its up for renewal. If it doesn’t pass Branch Manager Catherine Miller says they would need to come up with $420,000 from other sources and find some savings.
“Reducing hours, possibly reducing staff because though we might be able to pull some general fund from other branches in the county, I don’t think we would be able to make up that full amount," says Miller.
Miller says she is confident that the measure will pass. There is no opposing argument to the initiative on the ballot.
“Then we would be pulling in a greater amount of the general fund to support the South Lake Tahoe Library which would result in other branches losing partial funding.”
