Highway 99 is another step closer to having four lanes of uninterrupted traffic from Sacramento to Yuba City. Today, Caltrans celebrated the completion of major construction work on a new bridge next to the old Feather River Bridge in Nicolaus.
Caltrans District Director Jody Jones says the new bridge is the third of five projects Caltrans has undertaken to create a wider highway.
"The reason for the four-laning of 99 south of Yuba City was basically safety. There were a lot of accidents on this entire stretch of roadway." she says.
All four lanes over the river won't be open until late next month. Crews will soon open the new bridge, but close the old, adjacent bridge to perform maintenance work.
Voter-approved bonds and federal Recovery Act funds covered most of the $56.2 million cost.
Caltrans is finishing work on Highway 99 interchanges at Highway 113 and at Riego Road.
Both projects are scheduled to be completed by the end of July.
