The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning through 11 p.m. Tuesday for parts of the eastern Sierra into California and Western Nevada.
Forecasters say gusty winds, low humidity and dry conditions create conditions that can cause fires to grow quickly in size and intensity.
The affected area is in Mono and Eastern Alpine counties, the west-central Nevada basin, Mineral and southern Lyon counties – including Reno-Sparks and Carson City. The weather service says wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour are possible.
California and Nevada are in the third year of drought.
