If you are shopping in Davis you're encouraged to bring your own resuable bag. If you don't, stores will be required to charge you a minimum 10-cent fee for each paper or resuable bag.
The bag ban includes grocery stores, convenience stores, liquor stores and mini-marts.
Restaurants are not required to charge the fee for paper or reusable bags used for take-out food.
The Davis City Council adopted the ordinance in November 2013.
Environmental groups say single-use plastic bags litter streets and waterways and harm wildlife.
More than 100 California cities and counties have similar bans.
