Update: Three Dead, Including Hostage, Following Bank Robbery, Pursuit In Stockton

Update - 9:43 p.m.

(AP) — Stockton police say a second suspect has died after a bank robbery and gunbattle that led to the death of a hostage.

Stockton police say that in all, three people are dead in Wednesday's violence, which included a high-speed chase that left cars and houses riddled with bullets.

The violence began when three people robbed a Bank of the West branch and took three women hostage. Police say the robbers stole a bank employee's SUV and led dozens of police cars on a high-speed chase that last about 45 minutes.

During the chase, two of the hostages were thrown from the vehicle: one suffered a gunshot wound and the other had a grazing bullet wound.

As the SUV came to a stop, officers exchanged gunfire with someone inside the vehicle.

Update - 6:40 p.m.

The Bank of the West branch at Pacific Avenue and Hammer Lane in Stockton was held up at approximately 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

Three men exited the bank taking three female hostages with them.

Police who arrived at the scene were unable to stop their escape because of the hostages.

The robbers were carrying AK47's and fled in an SUV with the hostages inside. 

The vehicle led a dozen police cars in a pursuit on Interstate 5 to Lodi where it turned around and came back to Stockton. 

During the pursuit the robbers fired at officers.  One hostage was shot in the leg by suspects and thrown from the car, according to Stockton Police.

The robbers eventually stopped at Otto Drive and Thornton Road in Stockton and the second hostage was thrown out of the vehicle.

A hail of bullets struck the SUV and one of the suspects fell on the street and another was taken into custody. Ultimately, all 3 suspects were shot, one was killed. The 3rd hostage was found in the vehicle deceased from gunfire.

Police are still processing the crime scene, and a major investigation is underway with multiple agencies involved.
