A program to help eligible high school students and recent graduates meet the math requirement for transfer to four year schools has launched this summer. It’s part of a University of California pilot program to expand educational opportunities.
“Summer Up” offers classroom and on-line instruction as well as one-on-one math tutoring to help 350 students around the state.
Kaitlan Maxwell from Atwater says the program is really helping her get up to speed.
“This class helped me get into the transferable math,” she says. “So that’s why I took the class, because I didn’t take math my senior year.”
The program also helps students gain the confidence and critical thinking skills they’ll need to succeed at a UC or State University campus. “Summer Up” student Miguel Vilchis, also from Atwater, says he’d like to see the scope of the program expand in the future.
“Not just math. I believe they should open to like English subjects and Science subjects,” says Vilchis.
The program is a partnership between the University of California and local community colleges and high schools.
