A bill that would require California’s busiest airports to provide a private place for women to breastfeed their babies has cleared the state Senate.
Backers of the bill say women with young children are the fastest growing segment of the nation’s workforce.
Democratic State Senator Kevin De León says nursing mothers shouldn’t have to duck into a bathroom to nurse their infant.
“We must show new mothers the respect they deserve and not confine them to a restroom,” says De León. “This isn’t just a women’s issue, but this is about families and ensuring a strong and reliable workforce.”
San Francisco International is now the only airport in California with private breastfeeding rooms. Under the bill, the rooms would be required to have at least one chair and an electrical outlet.
If it passes, the law would go into effect at the beginning of 2016. The legislation now returns to the Assembly for a final vote.
