California lawmakers must adjourn their two-year legislative session by midnight Sunday. Plastic bags and ride-share companies top the final week’s agenda.
This is actually shaping up to be one of the slowest final weeks of session at the Capitol in recent years. Lawmakers already crossed the biggest item off their list earlier this month when they agreed to place a new water bond measure on the November ballot.
But they still have a few hundred bills left to debate. Two that have attracted the heaviest lobbying are measures that would ban plastic bags statewide and place tighter insurance requirements on ride-sharing companies like Lyft and Uber.
Other measures awaiting votes include a handful of gun control bills and a push to regulate groundwater pumping.
Lawmakers will likely be spending their Labor Day Weekend at the Capitol, as the constitution gives them until midnight Sunday to wrap up their work. Earlier this year, they spent Father’s Day passing the state budget.
