(AP) - Tonight, President Barack Obama will present to the nation his plan to defeat the militant group Islamic State, which has seized huge swaths of Iraq and Syria.
Among the president's most urgent priorities will be getting authorization from Congress to arm more moderate elements of the Syrian opposition fighting President Bashar Assad. And he could act on his own to carry out airstrikes on Syria and Iraq.
Obama also wants military and diplomatic commitments from other countries, including partners in Europe and the Middle East.
